How Anansi Deceived God

Anansi was terribly conceited after the whole corncob thing. God found Anansi entertaining, but his boasting was getting really annoying.

Then God gave Anansi an empty bag and said, “I have something in mind; find it and bring it back to me in the bag. »

Anansi asked questions, but God gave no further clues as to what that “something” might be. God sent the mortal on his way, saying that if he was only half as intelligent as he boasted he was, then he should have no problem understanding what "something" God wanted.

Anansi was perplexed. How could he know what God wanted in the bag? He left the sky and descended to Africa, where he had an encounter with the birds, explaining his predicament. The birds were friendly, but had no clues to offer.

However, everyone agreed to give Anansi a feather, allowing Anansi to fly. Anansi transformed these feathers into a beautiful coat, then flew into the sky, where he perched in a tree next to the house of God.

Some of the sky people saw this strange “bird” and began to talk about it. They wondered what kind of bird it was. Even God himself couldn't remember creating any sort of creature that looked like this.

One of those present suggested that if Anansi were smart, he might know what kind of bird it was. Anansi, in the tree, heard all this.

God's attendants were talking among themselves when one of them said, "Good luck finding Anansi – God sent him on an impossible mission." How could Anansi know that God wanted the sun and moon brought to him in a bag?

Hearing this, Anansi went out to look for the sun and the moon.

He went to the python, the wisest of all creatures on earth, and asked how the sun and the moon could be captured. The python advised him to go to the west, where the sun rests at night. The moon could be found in the east around the same time.

Then Anansi gathered the sun and the moon, placed them in the bag and brought them to God.

God was so pleased with Anansi's ingenuity that He made Anansi his captain on earth.

This is how Anansi deceived God.
