Marie, Ontario. Here is one of their stories: How the bat came to be.<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/mythslegendes.com\/en\/mythology-anichinabians\/\">Ojibway<\/a> were part of a series of very close, but distinct groups, occupying a territory located between the northeast of the bay <a href=\"https:\/\/mythslegendes.com\/en\/georgian-mythology\/\">Georgian<\/a> and eastern Lake Superior. These peoples who gathered near present-day Sault Ste. So,<br \/>the dawn did not come.<\/p><p>At first, all of the birds and animals did not notice. Some of<br \/>them woke up, then went back to sleep, thinking that they had made<br \/>a mistake, and it was not time to get up.<\/p><p>Other animals, who loved the night, like the panther and the owl,<br \/>were really glad that it stayed dark, so they continued to hunt.<\/p><p>But, after a while, so much time had passed that the birds and<br \/>animals knew that something was wrong.<\/p><p>They together, in the dark, to hold a council.<\/p><p>\u201cSun has gotten lost,\u201d said the eagle.<\/p><p>\u201cWe must look for him,\u201d said the bear.<\/p><p>So, all of the birds and animals went out to look for Sun.<\/p><p>They looked in caves and in the deep forest and on the mountains<br \/>and in the swamps.<\/p><p>But, Sun was not there. None of the birds and animals could find him.<\/p><p>Then, one of the animals, a small brown squirrel had an idea. \u201cMaybe<br \/>Sun is caught in a tall tree,\u201d he said.<\/p><p>Then, the small brown squirrel began to go from tree to tree, going<br \/>further and further toward the east. At last, in the top of a very<br \/>tall tree, he saw a glow of light.<\/p><p>He climbed up and saw that it was Sun. Sun&#039;s light was pale and he looked weak.<\/p><p>&quot;Help me, Little Brother,&quot; Sun said.<\/p><p>The small brown squirrel came close and began to chew at the branches<br \/>in which the Sun was caught. The closer he came to Sun, the hotter<br \/>it got. The more branches that he chewed free, the brighter Sun&#039;s light became.<\/p><p>\u201cI must stop now,\u201d said the small brown squirrel. \u201cMy<br \/>fur is burning. It&#039;s all turning black. \u00bb<\/p><p>\u201cHelp me,\u201d said Sun. \u201cDon&#039;t stop now. \u00bb<\/p><p>The small brown squirrel continued to work, but the heat of Sun<br \/>was very hot now and it was even brighter. \u201cMy tail is burning<br \/>away,\u201d said the small brown squirrel. \u201cI can do no more. \u00bb<\/p><p>\u201cHelp me,\u201d said Sun. \u201cSoon I will be free. \u00bb<\/p><p>So, the small brown squirrel continued to chew. But, the light<br \/>of Sun was very bright now.<\/p><p>\u201cI am growing blind,\u201d said the small brown squirrel.<br \/>\u201cI must stop. \u00bb<\/p><p>&quot;Just a little more,&quot; said Sun. \u201cI am almost free. \u00bb<\/p><p>Finally, the small brown squirrel chewed the last of the branches free.<\/p><p>As soon as he did, Sun broke free and rose up into the sky.<\/p><p>Dawn spread across the land and it was day again. All over the<br \/>world the birds and animals joined.<\/p><p>But, the small brown squirrel was not happy. He was blinded by<br \/>the brightness of Sun. His long tail had been burned away and what<br \/>fur he had left was now all black.<\/p><p>His skin had stretched from the heat and he clung there to the<br \/>top branches of that tall tree, unable to move.<\/p><p>Up in the sky, Sun looked down and felt sorry for the small brown<br \/>squirrel. He had suffered so much to save him.<\/p><p>&quot;Little Brother,&quot; Sun said. \u201cYou have helped me.<br \/>Now, I will give you something. Is there anything that you have<br \/>always wanted? \u00bb<\/p><p>\u201cI have always wanted to fly,\u201d said the small brown squirrel.<br \/>\u201cBut I am blinded now, and my tail is all burned away. \u00bb<\/p><p>Sun smiled \u201cLittle Brother,\u201d he said, \u201cfrom now<br \/>on you will be an even better flyer than the birds. Because you<br \/>came to close to me, my light will always be too bright for you,<br \/>but you will see in the dark and you will hear everything around<br \/>you as you fly.<\/p><p>From this time on, you will sleep when I rise into the sky and<br \/>when I say goodbye to the world each evening, you will wake up. \u00bb<\/p><p>Then the small animal which had once been a squirrel dropped from<br \/>the branch, spread its leathery wings and began to fly.<\/p><p>He no longer missed his tail and his brown fur and he knew that<br \/>when night came again, it would be his time.
