A handsome shepherd with green eyes was tending to the flock. The princess stopped and started talking to the shepherd. They discussed the nature around them, animals and flowers. And it does not stop there !

From that moment on, the Princess looked every day for a shepherd in the same place, and they spent long hours talking. Obviously, they fell in love, promising that they would love each other forever. However, when the king heard that his precious daughter had met the Shepherd, he got angry. The princess was supposed to marry a prince from a neighboring kingdom, not a shepherd she met by chance.

The poor girl could never see her shepherd again! Just out of respect for her father, the Princess accepted this cruel decision but persuaded the father to let her meet him one more time, one last time, so that she could say goodbye to him. So they saw each other again, in the same green fields as where they had met the first time. Once again, they talked for hours, this time not only about their love but also the fact that they couldn't be together.

While they were talking, they were crying. The tears shed by the blue-eyed girl flowed down the valley and formed a blue lake. The tears that flowed from the shepherd's green eyes formed a green lake. If they were apart, at least the lakes stayed together forever.

Iberian Mythology Wiki This is the story of the Vista do Rei.
