href=\"https:\/\/mythslegendes.com\/en\/\">mythology<\/a> Uyghur or Uighur describes the myths and <a href=\"https:\/\/mythslegendes.com\/en\/\">legends<\/a> of the Turkic-speaking people with a Sunni Muslim majority living in the Uyghur autonomous region of Xinjiang (called Eastern Turkestan by the Russians and British at the end of the 19<sup>e<\/sup>\u00a0century and previously placed in &quot;Chinese Tartary&quot;) in <a href=\"https:\/\/mythslegendes.com\/en\/mythes-et-legendes-chinois-1768\/\">China<\/a> and in Central Asia.<\/p>\n\n<p>They are related to the Uzbeks. Their tongue <a href=\"https:\/\/mythslegendes.com\/en\/mythes-et-legendes-turques-1708\/\">Turkish<\/a> is Uyghur. Originally from a region between the Selenga (in <a href=\"https:\/\/mythslegendes.com\/en\/mythes-et-legendes-mongoles-1736\/\">Mongolia<\/a>) and Lake Baikal (present-day Buryatia, in Russia), they founded the Uyghur Khaganate, located in present-day Mongolia, of Turkish culture of Manichaean religion which is the cradle of their civilization. Allies of <a href=\"https:\/\/mythslegendes.com\/en\/mythes-et-legendes-chinois-1768\/\">Chinese<\/a> against the Empire of <a href=\"https:\/\/mythslegendes.com\/en\/mythes-et-legendes-tibetains-1781\/\">Tibet<\/a>, their khaganate was destroyed in the IX<sup>e<\/sup>\u00a0century by the <a href=\"https:\/\/mythslegendes.com\/en\/kazakh-kyrgyz-mythology\/\">Kirghiz<\/a>, forcing them to descend further south.<\/p>\n\n<p>the <a href=\"https:\/\/mythslegendes.com\/en\/manichean-mythology\/\">manicheism<\/a> took root and developed in the various Uyghur states until towards the end of the I<sup>er<\/sup> millennium. Likewise, Nestorian Christianity, which reached Mongolia and China, was long present among the Uyghurs.<\/p>\n<p>The Uzbeks, once known as <i>Sartes<\/i>, take their name from \u00d6zbeg (1282-1341), a khan <a href=\"https:\/\/mythslegendes.com\/en\/mythes-et-legendes-mongoles-1736\/\">Mongolian<\/a> of the Golden Horde which reigned from 1312 to 1341. It was the related Chaybanid dynasty, conqueror of present-day Uzbekistan in 1507, who gave this name to their people.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5284 size-full\"
