Sioux Confederacy: <strong>Lakota, Nakota, Dakota, Assiniboin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The name &quot;Sioux&quot; is used to indicate a specific group of tribes, culturally and linguistically very close: Lakotas, Nakotas and Dakotas, names which all mean &quot;allies&quot;. The Sioux call each other &quot;\u00a0<em>Oceti sakowin oyate<\/em>\u00a0&quot;,&quot; The People of the Seven Fires &quot;or&quot; the Council of the Seven Fires &quot;, in reference to their seven original political divisions.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Dakotas<\/strong>\u00a0or Isantis, anglicized to Santee (traditional territory in Minnesota) include:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sisseton<\/li>\n<li>Wahpetons<\/li>\n<li>Wahpekutes<\/li>\n<li>Mdewakantons (\u201cThey inhabit the sacred lake\u201d). Spirit Lake tribe (Devil&#039;s Lake Reserve - North Dakota), Shakopee-Mdewankanton Reserve (Minnesota) and Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe (Flandreau Reserve - South Dakota);<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Nakota<\/strong>\u00a0or Ihanktuns (\u201cvillage at the end\u201d) or Yankton in English (national territory in the Dakotas) include (or included):<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Yanktons &quot;Iyanktonwan&quot; (&quot;They live at the end&quot;)<\/li>\n<li>Yanktonnais &quot;Iyanktonwanna&quot; (&quot;The little Yankton&quot;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Lakota<\/strong>\u00a0or Titunwans (\u201cprairie people\u201d) or Tetons in English (traditional Dakota\/Wyoming territory) was originally one of the seven council fires, but later split into\u00a0<abbr title=\"18th century\">xviii<sup>e<\/sup><\/abbr>\u00a0century, after their emigration to the great plains, in seven groups:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hunkpapas (\u201cThey camp at the entrance\u201d). Their greatest chefs are Sitting Bull and Gall.<\/li>\n<li>Oglalas (&quot;They scatter&quot;). They included Chiefs Red Cloud and Crazy Horse and the Medicine Man Black Elk.<\/li>\n<li>Sicangu (\u201cBurned thighs\u201d or \u201cburned\u201d). Chief Spotted Tail was one of them.<\/li>\n<li>Minneconjous &quot;Mnikwojupi&quot; (&quot;They are planting by the water&quot;). Chief Big Foot is infamous because it was his gang that was slaughtered in the Wounded Knee massacre.<\/li>\n<li>Itazipacolas (&quot;Sans-Arcs&quot;).<\/li>\n<li>Oohenunpas (&quot;Twice boiled&quot; or &quot;Two cauldrons&quot;), Two Kettles in English.<\/li>\n<li>Sihasapa, (&quot;Blackfoot&quot;), called Blackfoot Sioux in English, not to be confused with the Algonquin people of the Blackfoot).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Assiniboins <\/strong>were originally part of the Hunkpatina-Yanktonnais, but later broke away from their original people to move to the Canadian regions of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, where they kept their Nakota idiom and entered a state of permanent war with all the rest of the old Sioux confederation, rightly earning the name
