Armenian monsters

  • Al – The Al is a puny evil spirit that attacks pregnant women and steals newborn babies. Described as half-animal, half-man, its teeth are made of iron and its claws of brass or copper. He usually wears a pointed hat covered in bells, and can turn invisible.
  • Aralez – Aralezner – The oldest gods of the pantheon Armenian, Aralez is similar to a wolf. He can heal and revive fallen warriors by licking their wounds.
  • Devs – They are spirits composed of air coming from the mythology Zoroastrian (the Daevas), and share many similarities with angels. They reside in stony places and ruins.
  • Shahapet – The Shahapet are guardian spirits in the form of sept. They inhabited houses, orchards, fields, forests and cemeteries, among other places. The Shvaz type was more agriculturally oriented, while the Shvod was a home keeper. A Shvod that is treated well may reward the inhabitants of the house with gold, but if treated poorly it may cause strife and leave.
  • Nhang – The Nhang (from the Persian word for “crocodile”) was a river snake likened to a dragon. The creature could change into a woman to attract a man, then drag and drown the victim in order to drink their blood. The word "nhang" is sometimes used as a generic term for a sea monster in ancient literature armenian.
  • Piatek – The Piatek is a large mammalian griffin-like creature.
