C’est l’histoire du berger qui ne mentait jamais. Il était une fois, un homme qui possédait un grand troupeau. En prenait soin un berger qui avait la réputation de toujours dire la vérité.
The shepherd who never lied
One day when the shepherd came down from the mountain, his master asked him:
- How are the cows doing?
- Some are fat, others lanky.
- And the proud bull?
- Plump and gorgeous.
- And the pasture?
- Bien vert par endroits et sec à d’autres.
- Et l’eau des ruisseaux ?
- Cloudy here and clear elsewhere.
One day the farmer went to the pasture. Along the way, he met one of his friends who was also going to see his herd.
- Pourquoi appelle-t-on ton berger, « l’homme qui ne ment jamais »?
- Parce qu’il n’a jamais dit un seul mensonge.
- I will make him say one.
- C’est impossible.
- What are we betting?
- Half of each of our farms.
- Bet concluded.
L’ami du fermier employa tous les moyens possibles pour faire mentir le berger. Un jour, il alla chasser dans un endroit que l’on pouvait observer du pâturage gardé par le berger qui ne mentait jamais. La nuit venue, son maître lui demanda devant son ami :
- Quelqu’un est-il allé chasser dans la montagne aujourd’hui ?
- Je vais vous dire mon maître : là-bas, loin dans la prairie, j’ai vu un homme ou une femme monté sur un cheval ou sur une jument ; il avait une carabine ou un fusil et son chien ou sa chienne courait après un renard ou une renarde.
On approchait du jour où prenait fin le pari. Un matin, la fille de l’ami parieur, demoiselle de vingt ans fort jolie, monta à cheval et, sans rien dire à son père, se rendit au pâturage où était le berger.
When night fell, the young girl returned and gave her father the heart of the proud bull, wrapped in fern leaves.
L’ami vint dire au fermier que son berger avait tué le fier taureau.
The next day, the shepherd came down from the mountain, planted his stick in the ground, put his cape and his hat on it and said to him:
- Staff, you are my master; ask me questions.
- How are the cows doing?
- Some are fat, others lanky.
- And the proud bull?
- Il m’a chargé et j’ai dû le réduire au silence.
He grabbed his stick, thrust it further, and repeated his questions.
Il arriva à la maison de son maître, pendit son sac à un clou et s’assit. On l’appela pour qu’il passe dans la salle où étaient réunis le fermier, son ami et quelques hommes. En leur présence, le maître demande :
- How are the cows doing?
- Some are fat, others lanky.
- And the proud bull?
The shepherd let his head fall back on his chest without answering.
- And the proud bull? asked the farmer again.
The shepherd raised his head; he stared at the assistants one by one and said:
- Pour les beaux yeux d’une brune et un corps harmonieux, Le fier taureau a perdu son coeur.
Son maître se leva d’un bond et s’écria :
- Cheer ! Long live my boy! The cow that gave birth to this bull will make a new one.
Il le prit dans ses bras. Et l’ami de son maître lui donna sa fille en mariage.
