Mythologie Galloise

La mythologie galloise comprend à la fois les traditions folkloriques développées au Pays de Galles et les traditions développées par les Britanniques celtiques ailleurs avant la fin du premier millénaire. Comme dans la plupart des sociétés à prédominance orale, la mythologie et l’histoire celtiques ont été enregistrées oralement par des spécialistes tels que les druides.

Ce dossier oral a été perdu ou modifié à la suite de contacts extérieurs et d’invasion au fil des ans. Une grande partie de cette mythologie et de l’histoire modifiées est préservée dans les manuscrits gallois médiévaux , qui comprennent le livre rouge d’Hergest, le livre blanc de Rhydderch, le Livre d’Aneirin et le livre de Taliesin.

Parmi les autres ouvrages liés à la mythologie galloise figurent la compilation historique latine du IXe siècle Historia Brittonum («Histoire des Britanniques») et la chronique latine du XIIe siècle de Geoffrey of Monmouth Historia Regum Britanniae («Histoire des rois de Grande-Bretagne»), comme ainsi que du folklore plus tardif , comme les matériaux rassemblés dans The Welsh Fairy Book de William Jenkyn Thomas (1908).
