Deirdre's Lamentations

Deirdre, looking back at the lands of Alban, sang this lai:

Beloved is this eastern land,
Alba (Scotland), with its lakes.
Oh that I don't have to leave her,
Unless it's to go with Naos!
Beloved are Dunfigha and Dunfin.
Beloved is the Dun that overlooks them.
Beloved is Inisdraiyen (Imstrynich?),
And beloved is Dun Sween.
The forest of the sea to which Ainnle was to come, alas!
I leave her forever
And Naos, on the Alban coast.
Glen Lay (Glen Luy?), I would sleep to his sweet whisper.
Fish and game, and the fats of cooked meats,
Such would be my food at Glen Lay.
Glenmassan! High is its wild garlic, beautiful its branches
I would like to sleep wide awake
above shaggy Invermasan.
Glen Etive! in which I put my first house,
Lovely were her groves at daybreak
When the sun hit Glen Etive.
Glen Urchay was my delight;
It is the straight valley with many crests.
Full of joy were his companions around Naos
At Glen Urchay.
Glendaruadh (Glendaruel?)
My joy with every man who belongs to him.
Sweet is the voice of the cuckoo
On the bending tree,
It is mild above Glendaruadh.
Beloved is Drayen at the Loud Shore!
Beloved is Avich (Dalavich?) with pure sand.
Oh if I couldn't leave the east
Unless he was to come with me!
Beloved
